A story of two painters connected by family roots, artistic creativity, and a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage for future generations.

MILIĆ OF MAČVA — Master of Serbian Fantastic Painting
Milić od Mačve (1934–2000), born Milić Stanković in Mačvanski Belotić, Serbia, was one of the distinctive figures of twentieth-century Serbian painting. As a member of the Mediala artistic movement, he developed a highly individual style rooted in a synthesis of fantasy, surrealism, mythology, Serbian history, and folk tradition. His artistic legacy extends beyond local and national boundaries, with international presentations of his work encompassing exhibitions in numerous European countries, the Americas, and Asia.
His international significance is also reflected in the presence of his works in important art collections, including the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Vatican Museums, and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva. His artistic vision represents a compelling fusion of individual imagination and a profound connection to Serbian cultural tradition.
Nenad Stanković: Continuing an Artistic and Family Tradition
Nenad Stanković, an academically trained painter born in 1965 in Mačvanski Belotić, is Milić's nephew and one of those actively dedicated to preserving the memory of his uncle's artistic legacy. He graduated in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade and has been a member of the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS) since 1991. His professional career encompasses classical and sacred painting, exhibitions in Serbia and abroad, and pedagogical work.
A particularly significant element of this family and artistic narrative is Radovan Tower, which Milić built in honour of his father. Nenad has taken responsibility for the property, with the intention of restoring it and developing it into a venue for exhibitions, literary gatherings, concerts, and other cultural programmes.

His commitment therefore carries a broader significance: the preservation of heritage becomes an initiative to cultivate new cultural life and create a lasting space for artistic expression and public engagement.
From National Heritage to International Cultural Dialogue
While Milić od Mačve left a profound mark on Serbian and international visual art, Nenad Stanković continues to contribute to contemporary Serbian culture through his own painting and pedagogical work. Their artistic expressions need not be identical for their shared interest in symbolism, imagination, and cultural memory to be recognised.
Their story offers an opportunity to introduce Serbian artistic tradition to international audiences through a meaningful combination of historical heritage, contemporary artistic practice, and tangible initiatives dedicated to the preservation of cultural spaces.
The legacy of Milić od Mačve is more than a collection of paintings and memories. It also represents a responsibility to preserve, interpret, and transmit art to future generations. In this respect, Nenad Stanković's commitment to restoring Radovan Tower establishes an important link between Mačva's artistic past and the possibilities for its future cultural development.

An Anecdote from the Atelier of Milić od Mačve
One anecdote from the 1980s, when I was a student and Milić od Mačve was preparing an exhibition in Szentendre, Hungary, has remained vivid in my memory.
I happened to walk into his atelier and heard Milić loudly proclaiming:
"Ja sam kostur Radovanov i unuk Pantelijin!"
("I am Radovan's skeleton and Pantelija's grandson!")

He was reciting the words in a rather peculiar language which, to my ears, sounded suspiciously like Hungarian. Intrigued, I entered the atelier and asked him:
"Milić, since when have you started learning Hungarian?"
He turned to me and exclaimed, with unmistakable indignation:
"What Hungarian? This is English!"

I simply had to laugh.
It was one of those spontaneous moments that reveal something of an artist's temperament beyond his paintings: Milić's theatrical presence, his conviction, and his wonderfully unpredictable sense of humour. Decades later, the memory still brings a smile to my face.
A Living Legacy
The story of Milić od Mačve and Nenad Stanković is ultimately a story of continuity: between generations, between artistic creation and cultural responsibility, and between the preservation of the past and the possibilities of the future.
Through the enduring significance of Milić's artistic vision and Nenad's commitment to safeguarding their shared heritage, the cultural identity of Mačva has the potential to reach new audiences and inspire future generations.
Their connection reminds us that artistic heritage remains truly alive not only through the works that survive, but also through the people who preserve their meaning and create opportunities for that heritage to continue to evolve.
